I recently received some great advice from a successful guy. We were discussing career aptitude tests as part of our discussion on a variety of subjects. We both exchanged our experiences with such “tests” throughout our schooling. I shared my opinion that I found these tests to be somewhat silly.

In reply, this gentleman challenged me to conduct a different type of test. He suggested I talk with 3 trusted people in my life who knew me well during the ages of 6-10. Obviously most of these contacts will be family members. He proposed that I ask these 3 contacts this question, “What did I enjoy doing the most at that age?” For example, did I spend most of my time on the computer, playing with dolls, etc. What he is suggesting is that what people enjoyed at that age will remain a motivator or driver in their life today.

So regardless of where you are at in your career or job. I would suggest to anyone to conduct this simple “test” and see what you find out!

If you happen to uncover you might be in the wrong job, role, or company and are interested in Information Technology-reach out to me!
