From Ordinary to Super Successful

Posted by

I read an article recently that got me thinking. It was titled, “7 Traits That Distinguish Super Successful People from Ordinary Ones.”  It was an interesting read. It highlighted some of today’s most successful and famous billionaires and what they did (or didn’t do) to achieve their incredible success.  Several of the takeaways from the article can be applied in recruiting and interviewing.

  • Do what you love, but follow the money

This is true when engaging candidates in new opportunities. While the role might be exactly what they want in terms of job responsibilities and duties, it is mission critical that the compensation expectation also aligns.

  • Imitate, Don’t Innovate

This “trait” was matched to Bill Gates as the founder of Microsoft. It embodies the age old saying, “good artists borrow, great artist steal”. This I think can be applied in software development. It is a sought after skill for a developer to take an already established line of code and make it better.

  • Know-How is Good, Know-Who is Better

This is certainly true in the growing field of Information Technology and certainly appeals to me as a recruiter. In this ever tightening job market, accepted offers are made when there is an established human relationship. I encourage all professionals especially within IT, to establish a relationship with a recruiter. Because for all you know, your dream job may come across their desk one day. You definitely want to be the first person that recruiter calls.
