Bring the Wood

Some of you may be familiar with the football idiom “bring the wood.” For those of you who are not familiar with the idiom it means to play or tackle with extra force.

            On January 16th, 2010, the New Orleans Saints had a playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals. As a pregame speech, the Saints coach, Sean Payton, handed each player of his team with a baseball bat. Each bat had the words: “Saints vs. Cardinals. Jan. 16, 2010. Bring the Wood!” printed on it. The Saints beat the Arizona Cardinals 45-15.

The baseball bat inspired the players to go into this game with extra power and force. The Saints stepped into their “office” and brought the wood.

            The idiom “bring the wood” is an everyday mentality you need to have you step into the workplace. When faced with adversity do not avoid it or make excuses but overcome it. View the obstacles placed in your way as a learning blocks. Have the mentality you are going to succeed. These learning blocks will make you better. When you are unsuccessful, ask your manager for help or advice. There is some level of competition in every job and industry. Have the passionate drive to compete at work. When you “bring the wood” to the office, you will be more successful.
